… Frostbite is necrosis caused by the slow freezing of tissue, and is classified into four stages based on the depth of necrosis. The first stage (erythematous frostbite) is necrosis of only the epidermis, showing redness; the second stage (bullous frostbite) is necrosis of part of the dermis, showing blisters; the third stage (crusted frostbite) is necrosis of the entire skin, showing ulcers; and the fourth stage (necrotic frostbite) is necrosis of the muscles and bones below the skin. The first and second stages are called superficial frostbite because they do not leave scars, while the third and fourth stages are called deep frostbite because they cause scars and defects in deep tissue. …
