A town in the province of Madrid, in the Autonomous Community of Madrid in central Spain. Located near the confluence of the Tagus and Jarama rivers, on the main route south from Madrid, it is known as a distribution center for sugar beets, asparagus, and strawberries. Industries include chemicals, metals, and food. In 1808, it was the home of the Junta (central assembly), the central body of the anti-Napoleonic resistance. There is a royal palace on the banks of the Tagus River, dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, and it is also famous as a tourist destination. It was registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 2001. Population: 36,162 (estimated 1991).
