The capital of Tripura state in northeastern India. Population 189,327 (2001). It developed as a distribution center for rice, jute, rapeseed, sugarcane, cotton, and other crops produced in the state. Tea, tobacco, flour, edible oil, handwoven fabric, and other products have traditionally been produced in the city. The need for modern industry led to the birth of the paper and jute industries. It is also an important air gateway to Tripura state, which is located in northeastern India across from Bangladesh.
