Agartala - Agartala (English spelling)

The capital of Tripura state in northeastern India. Population 189,327 (2001). It developed as a distribution center for rice, jute, rapeseed, sugarcane, cotton, and other crops produced in the state. Tea, tobacco, flour, edible oil, handwoven fabric, and other products have traditionally been produced in the city. The need for modern industry led to the birth of the paper and jute industries. It is also an important air gateway to Tripura state, which is located in northeastern India across from Bangladesh.

インド北東部、トリプラ州の州都。人口18万9327（2001）。州内で産する米、ジュート、菜種、サトウキビ、綿花などの集散地として発達した。茶、たばこ、小麦粉、食用油、手織布などの製造が伝統的に行われている。近代工業の必要性が叫ばれ、製紙、ジュート工業の誕生をみた。バングラデシュを挟んでインド北東部に位置するトリプラ州の空の玄関としても重要。
