Krak des Chevaliers

Japanese: クラク･デ･シュバリエ（英語表記）Krak des Chevaliers

A 12th-13th century castle located about 60 km northeast of Tripoli, Lebanon. The name means "Knight's Fortress." The Crusaders built many castles with more advanced technology than those in Western Europe to protect their occupied territories in the Near East with a small number of warriors, and this castle is a representative example. It was built with a double wall on a steep mountaintop about 600 meters above sea level, overlooking the main road connecting the Mediterranean Sea and inland cities. The inner wall was built around 1110-70, and further reinforced from the end of the 12th century to the beginning of the 13th century, with a chapel in the courtyard and a powerful castle tower with three towers along the southern wall, as well as the outer wall.

レバノンのトリポリの北東約60kmにある12～13世紀の城。〈騎士の城砦〉の意。十字軍は少数の戦士で近東の占領地を守るため，そこに西欧よりも技術の進歩した多数の城を造ったが，この城はその代表的なもの。地中海と内陸の都市をむすぶ幹線道路を見下ろす，標高約600mのけわしい山頂に，二重に城壁をめぐらして築かれた。1110‐70年ころに内郭の城壁を造り，12世紀末から13世紀初めにこれをさらに補強してその中庭に礼拝堂，南側の城壁沿いに3塔で構成された強大な天守を建設するとともに，外郭の城壁を築いた。
