[1] (Adam Smith) British economist and ethicist. Father of classical economics. Professor and chancellor of the University of Glasgow. Criticized mercantilist protectionism, advocated a liberal economics based on laissez-faire, sought the source of national wealth in labor in general, and established the theoretical foundations of the Industrial Revolution. "The Wealth of Nations" is the classic that first scientifically systematized economics. Other works include "The Theory of Moral Sentiments." ( 1723-1790 ) [2] (William Smith) British geologist and paleontologist. Pioneer of British geology and stratigraphy. Published "Atlas of the Great Britain" in 1815 and "Fossils and Strata" in 1816. ( 1769-1839 ) [3] (William Robertson Smith) British theologian and religious scholar. Studied the "Old Testament" from a comparative religious perspective. His major works include "The Religion of the Semites" and "The Old Testament in the Jewish Church." ( 1846-94 ) [4] (Theobald Smith) American pathologist. Professor at Harvard University. A pioneer in comparative pathology and serology of infectious and parasitic diseases. He discovered the pathogens and vectors of many infectious animal diseases. His major work is "Parasitism and Disease." ( 1859-1934 ) [5] (Henry John Stephen Smith) British mathematician. Professor at Oxford University. He initially worked on geometry, but later specialized in number theory. The results of his research were published in the "Report on the Study of Number Theory" from 1859 to 1865. ( 1826-83 )

[一] (Adam Smith アダム━) イギリスの経済学者、倫理学者。古典派経済学の祖。グラスゴー大学教授・総長。重商主義的保護政策を批判し、自由放任主義の立場にたつ自由主義的経済学を主張し、国富の源泉を労働一般に求め、産業革命の理論的基礎づけを行なった。「国富論」は経済学を初めて科学的に体系づけた古典。ほかに「道徳感情論」などがある。（一七二三‐九〇）[二] (William Smith ウィリアム━) イギリスの地質学者、古生物学者。イギリス地質学、層序学の開拓者。一八一五年に「英国地層図」、一六年に「化石と地層」を発表した。（一七六九‐一八三九）[三] (William Robertson Smith ウィリアム=ロバートソン━) イギリスの神学者、宗教学者。「旧約聖書」を比較宗教学的に研究。主著に「セム人の宗教」「ユダヤ教会における旧約聖書」など。（一八四六‐九四）[四] (Theobald Smith シアボールド━) アメリカの病理学者。ハーバード大学教授。伝染病、寄生虫病における比較病理学、血清学の先駆者。多くの動物の伝染病の病原体およびその媒体を発見した。主著「寄生と疾患」。（一八五九‐一九三四）[五] (Henry John Stephen Smith ヘンリー=ジョン=スティーブン━) イギリスの数学者。オックスフォード大学教授。初め幾何学にとりくんでいたが、後、数論を専門に研究。一八五九～六五年「数論に関する研究報告書」にその研究成果が発表された。（一八二六‐八三）
