Clactonian culture

An Early Paleolithic culture found in northern Europe. It was thought to be a flake-based culture that coexisted with the Abbeville and Acheulean cultures, both of which had hand axes, but today it is thought to be not an independent culture, but a group of stone tools found in ruins with special shapes that belong to both the Abbeville and Acheulean cultures. It was first discovered and named at a site on the outskirts of London. Wooden spears, believed to be the oldest wooden tools, have also been excavated from this site.

ヨーロッパ北部にみられる前期旧石器文化。握斧(あくふ)（ハンド・アックス）をもつアブビル文化やアシュール文化に併存していた剥片(はくへん)系の文化と考えられていたが、今日では、独立の文化ではなく、アブビル、アシュール両文化に属する特殊な形の遺跡から発見される石器群である、とする考え方も出ている。ロンドン郊外の遺跡で最初に発見され、命名された。ここからは最古の木器とされる木製の槍(やり)も出土している。
