…The treaty was concluded in Passarowitz (now Požarevac) in Serbia in 1718, with Britain and the Netherlands as the arbitrators. After successfully capturing Belgrade, Austria and Venice acquired Oltenia (western Wallachia), Banat, the Timișoara region, northern Bosnia, and parts of Serbia, while Venice acquired the Morea Peninsula, the Aegean islands, and parts of the coastal areas of Albania and Dalmatia. The treaty was particularly notable for Austria's expansion to the south (although it retained Serbia and Oltenia until 1739). Austria gained free trade rights within the Ottoman Empire and the right to protect Catholics within the Ottoman Empire, solidifying its position as an absolutist state in Eastern Europe. …

...The area is about 76,160 km2. The name Wallachia was mainly used by foreigners, and Romanians now divide it into the Muntenia and Oltenia regions, separated by the Olt River, but historically it has been called Tara Româneascǎ (meaning "Land of the Romans"). In the Middle Ages, the Slavs who lived around here called the descendants of the Dacian Romans and who spoke Romance languages Vlah, Valah, and so the term Wallachia, meaning "Land of the Vlahs," was born, and this word spread to the Byzantine Empire and Western Europe.
