...A bird that appears in the story of Emperor Jimmu's eastern expedition in the Kojiki and Nihon shoki. When Emperor Jimmu's army was about to cross Kumano and Yoshino and enter Yamato, Yatagarasu was dispatched by order of Amaterasu Omikami (Takagi no Okami in the Kojiki) to lead the way. This crow also served as an emissary when the local Yamato lords Eukashi and Otoukashi were pacified. Yatagarasu is said to be the ancestor of Kamo no Agata Nushi of Yamashiro (Nihon Shoki, Kogo Shūi). He inherited the position of shuden, and among his duties were "attending the imperial carriage" (Engishiki) and "carrying candles" at the Daijosai (Hokuzan Shō), which is thought to show the correspondence between myth and ritual. ...
