A mountain range with a total length of about 1,500 km that cuts across Eastern Europe in an arc. It stretches from western Slovakia through southeastern Poland and southwestern Ukraine to central Romania. It is also called the Karpaty Mountains or Carpathian Mountains. The highest point is Mount Gerlachovka (2,663 m) in the Tatra Mountains in the east. Based on topography and geology, it is divided into northwestern, central and southeastern parts. The southernmost part is also called the Transylvanian Alps. It is rich in forests and is used for grazing.
