A mountain range with a total length of about 1,500 km that cuts across Eastern Europe in an arc. It stretches from western Slovakia through southeastern Poland and southwestern Ukraine to central Romania. It is also called the Karpaty Mountains or Carpathian Mountains. The highest point is Mount Gerlachovka (2,663 m) in the Tatra Mountains in the east. Based on topography and geology, it is divided into northwestern, central and southeastern parts. The southernmost part is also called the Transylvanian Alps. It is rich in forests and is used for grazing. It is also rich in underground resources such as oil, natural gas, lignite and rock salt.

東欧を弧状に横切る全長約1500kmの山脈。スロバキア西部から，ポーランド南東部，ウクライナ南西部を経て，ルーマニア中央部に及ぶ。カルパチkarpaty山脈，カルパート山脈ともいう。最高点は東部のタトラ山地中のゲルラホフカ山（2663m）。地形・地質上から北西部・中央部・南東部に区分される。南端の部分はトランシルバニア・アルプスとも呼ばれる。森が多く，放牧が行われる。石油・天然ガス・褐炭・岩塩などの地下資源も豊富。
