Brittle star (spider star)

Brittle star (spider star)
A general term for echinoderms belonging to the class Ophiuroidea, or one of these species. Ophiuroidea are widely distributed in oceans around the world, living from the intertidal zone to depths of about 6,000 m. Their external and internal structure is quite different from that of starfish. Five long, slender arms emerge from a small disk in the center of the body, with clearly defined boundaries. The surfaces of the disk and arms are covered with small calcareous plates arranged like scales. They have a mouth in the center of the underside of the disk, and rows of hard bone teeth around and at the back of the mouth. They eat garbage and small animals that accumulate on the seabed, but some species can swallow bivalves and snails whole.
