A fish of the family Goby in the order Perciformes (illustration). It is found from Chiba Prefecture southward, and its body color is highly variable and varies depending on the region, environment, and spawning season. It is characterized by the rear end of the first dorsal fin being continuous with the front end of the second dorsal fin, and the upper end of the pectoral fin having several free rays. It usually lives at the bottom of tide pools relatively high from the coastline, and if it senses human movement it will quickly retreat under a rock or somewhere similar. Males are usually larger than females. When they grow to over 3 cm, it is easy to distinguish between males and females by the presence of the male's sperm vesicle.
