Like calcite, it is a calcium carbonate mineral and is polymorphic. Its crystal habits are columnar, acicular, etc. Sometimes it forms a pseudohexagon. It is colorless and transparent or a pale color of various colors. It is found in the crevices of volcanic rocks and in various mineral deposits in the form of coral. It is also important as a mineral (biomineral) made by living organisms such as bivalve shells. It has clear cleavage in one direction in the columns, a hardness of 3.5 to 4, a specific gravity of 2.93, and high double refraction. It has a sub-ostracodile fracture.

方解石と同じく炭酸カルシウムの鉱物で互いに多形。晶癖は柱状，針状など。時に擬六方体を作る。無色透明か各色の淡色。火山岩のすきまや各種鉱床中にサンゴ状などの姿で産する。二枚貝の殻など生物がつくる鉱物（生体鉱物）としても重要。へき開は柱の一方向に明瞭，硬度3.5〜４，比重2.93，複屈折が大きい。断口は亜貝殻状。
