One of the meninges that covers the brain and spinal cord. Of the three meninges, the one between the outer layer, the dura mater, and the inner layer, the pia mater, is the arachnoid mater. The arachnoid mater is a thin membrane with no blood vessels, but the pia mater is connected to it by thin fibrous trabeculae called arachnoid columns, which look like spider threads, hence the name arachnoid. The cavity between the arachnoid mater and the pia mater is called the subarachnoid space, and is filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Therefore, the subarachnoid space is continuous with the ventricles.

脳と脊髄をおおう髄膜の一つ。3枚ある髄膜のうち，外層の硬膜と内層の軟膜の中間にあるのが〈くも膜〉である。くも膜は血管を伴わない薄い膜であるが，軟膜はくも膜柱という細い繊維状の梁柱で接していて，それがクモの糸状に見えるので，このような名称で呼ばれるようになった。軟膜との間の腔所をくも膜下腔subarachnoid spaceといい，そこは髄液(脳脊髄液)で満たされている。したがって，くも膜下腔は脳室と連続している。
