Iōannēs (of Damascus)

A theologian who, between 675 and 749, was the first to systematically summarize Christian doctrine. His Latin name was Johannes. He is considered the last Church Father in the Eastern Orthodox Church. Born in Damascus, Syria, to a Christian family of nobility, he served as an official under the Islamic Caliphate, but soon aspired to monastic life and entered the monastery of St. Sabbath in Palestine. During the Iconoclasm movement in the Byzantine Empire, he defended the veneration of icons in three treatises beginning in 726, which became the theoretical basis for those who supported the iconoclasm.

キリスト教の教義を初めて体系的にまとめた神学者。ラテン名はヨハネスJohannes。東方正教会では最後の教父とされる。シリアのダマスクスでキリスト教徒の名門に生まれ，イスラム･カリフ王朝下で役人をつとめたが，ほどなくして修道生活を志し，パレスティナの聖サバス修道院に入った。ビザンティン帝国のイコノクラスムに際しては，726年より3点の論考でイコン崇敬を擁護し，それがイコン擁護派の理論的根拠となった。
