Stone tools from about 2 million years ago to about 1.5 million years ago are collectively called Oldowan stone tools, and include relatively primitive tools such as round natural stones with one end chipped several times (pebble tools). Roughly 1.5 million years ago and later, a more sophisticated stone tool culture called Neo-Oldowan stone tools (progressive Oldowan stone tools) appeared, and are characterized by the inclusion of primitive hand axes.
