Cavallini - Pietro Cavallini

Cavallini - Pietro Cavallini

Italian painter. He is considered one of the leading painters (Roman School) who were active in Rome from the late 13th century to the early 14th century. He was from the Celloni family, who owned assets in Rome. As only three historical documents remain, the details of his life are unclear, but it is known that he was mainly active in Rome, that he went to Naples at the invitation of the Angevin family in the early 14th century, and that he lived a long life. His style is based on the Romanesque and Byzantine painting techniques that were rooted in Rome at the time, but he also has fresh creative elements that seem to have been learned from ancient or early Christian art. His figures are drawn with a sense of volume and humanity. His representative works include the mosaic "Life of the Virgin" (1291) that decorates the apse of the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome, and the fresco "The Last Judgment" (c. 1293) in the Basilica of Santa Cecilia.
