Laughing Kookaburra (English: laughing kookaburra)
A bird of the Alcedinidae family in the Coraciiformes order (illustration). This large kingfisher is well known for its cry that sounds like human laughter. Total length is about 65 cm. The center of the head, eye line, back, and most of the wings are gray-brown, and some of the coverts are gray-blue. The chest and abdomen are white. Most of the tail feathers are brown with black horizontal stripes. The plumage of the males and females is almost the same color. It is found in eastern Australia and has been introduced to Western Australia, Tasmania, and the Kangaroo Islands. It lives in open forests and savannas, and is often seen in woods near human settlements.
