Kato Kagekazu

Japanese: 加藤景員 - かとう・かげかず
Kato Kagekazu
Years of birth: Years of birth and death unknown. A military commander in the late Heian period. He is said to be a descendant of either Fujiwara Toshihito, the Shogun of the Naval Forces, or Noin, but there is no definite proof. He was called Kato Go. His father was Kaga no Suke Kagemichi. He lived in Ise Province (Mie Prefecture), but killed a member of the Taira clan in the same province and fled to the eastern provinces with his sons Mitsukazu and Kageyoshi. He sought refuge with the Kudo clan, a powerful clan in Izu Province, and is said to have followed the Kudo clan to defeat Minamoto no Tametomo, who had been exiled to Izu Oshima, during the Kao era (1169-1171). In 1180 (Jisho 4), he and his two sons participated in the uprising of Minamoto no Yoritomo, and fought bravely in the Battle of Ishibashiyama. The battle resulted in a major defeat for the Minamoto clan, and Kagekazu wandered the mountains of Hakone before entering Hashiyuzan and becoming a monk. He was ordered to defeat the Iga Taira clan in 1184 (Genryaku 1), but it seems he died a few years later.
