Northern Fulmar - Furumakamome (English spelling) fulmar

Northern Fulmar - Furumakamome (English spelling) fulmar

A seabird of the order Pelecaniformes and family Pelecanidae. It is a relatively large species, with a total length of about 48 cm. It has a thick body, a thick beak, and somewhat broad wings, and is similar in shape to gulls, but its most distinct feature is its well-developed tubular nose. It is found in the cold northern waters of the North Pacific and North Atlantic, and nests on islands and rock shelves on coastal cliffs. It eats zooplankton floating on the surface of the open ocean, but also eats fishery waste and gathers in groups around ships. It is said that the recent increase in numbers is due to the waste, but it is unclear how much they depend on natural food, so this is open to debate. In Japan, it is often seen in the sea off the coast of Hokkaido. There are two types, one with gray-brown plumage and one with blue-gray plumage. Young birds spend 3 or 4 years at sea, return to their breeding grounds at 5 or 6 years old, and begin breeding at 7 years old. In addition to the closely related southern giant petrel, the Antarctic waters are home to the largest species, the southern giant petrel, the Cape petrel, the Antarctic petrel, and snow petrels.
