Born in 1776. Son of a rudder craftsman from Sanuki (Kagawa Prefecture). Studied astronomy and surveying under Hazama Shigetomi. In 1816, he created a surveyed map of Sanuki and was appointed as a samurai of the Takamatsu domain. He became interested in coastal defense, manufactured and improved firearms, and designed new warships. In 1829, he became a provisional magistrate for public works, and developed the Sakaide salt fields covering approximately 115 hectares. He also invented a water pump for agricultural use. He died on May 7, 1839. He was 62 years old. He was commonly known as Eizaemon. His work includes "Memory of Building Battleships."
