A general term for the residue left over after the oil is extracted from oil-rich plant seeds such as soybeans, rapeseed, and cottonseed. Along with fish fertilizer, it has long been in circulation as a fertilizer, and was the mainstream fertilizer sold until around 1940. The three elements contained in oil cakes are as shown in the table, but they are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen is mainly in protein form, phosphorus is mainly in phytin form, and potassium is water-soluble. Nitrogen mineralization in soil is completed in about one month under optimal conditions, so it is preferred as an excellent slow-release fertilizer for fertilizer-heavy cultivation such as greenhouse horticulture.
