Sea lion incense

Japanese: 海狸香 - かいりこう

Also known as castoreum. Dried preputial glands of male and female beavers. Has a strong animal odor, but gives off a fragrant scent when diluted. The components of the fragrance are undetermined, but contain 40-70% of a reddish-brown resinous substance soluble in ethanol, traces of benzoic acid, and 4-5% castoreum. It was once used as a source of perfume, but beavers have declined due to overhunting, and it is rarely used for practical purposes today.

カストリウムとも。ビーバーの雌雄の包皮腺を乾燥したもの。強い動物臭があるが，うすめると芳香を発する。香成分は未確定であるが，エタノールに可溶の赤褐色の樹脂状物質40〜70％，微量の安息香酸，および４〜５％のカストリンを含む。かつては香料の原料とされたが，ビーバーが乱獲のため減少し，現在は実用に供されることは少ない。
