Sea lion incense
Also known as castoreum. Dried preputial glands of male and female beavers. Has a strong animal odor, but gives off a fragrant scent when diluted. The components of the fragrance are undetermined, but contain 40-70% of a reddish-brown resinous substance soluble in ethanol, traces of benzoic acid, and 4-5% castoreum. It was once used as a source of perfume, but beavers have declined due to overhunting, and it is rarely used for practical purposes today.
