1886‐1966 Egyptian thinker. Studied at Al-Azhar University and in London. One of the liberal enlightened thinkers who inherited the Islamic reform ideas of Muhammad Abduh. In 1925, in "Principles of Islam and Government," he advocated the separation of religion and political power, and made clear his position denying the secular authority of the caliph, which led to attacks from the conservative Ulema of Al-Azhar. In his later years, he was active at the Arab League Academy. [Fujita Susumu] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
