A town in Sayo County in western Hyogo Prefecture. The main settlement is along the Sayo River, a tributary of the Chikusa River, and flourished as a post town on the road to Izumo and Inaba. It is a key transportation hub between Sanyo and Sanin, with the Kishin Line, Chugoku Expressway, and National Route 179 passing through it. Rice, flowers, chestnuts, and shiitake mushrooms are cultivated here, and lumber and agricultural equipment are manufactured here. Hirafuku in the north was once the castle town of the Sayo Domain, which had a stipend of 10,000 koku, and the old townscape remains. In October 2005, the town was incorporated with the towns of Mikazuki, Nankou, and Kozuki in Sayo County. 307.44 km2 . Population: 19,265 (2010).
