The contamination of waters, especially the ocean, by oil is called oil pollution. Since the 1950s, the worldwide increase in maritime oil transport has led to an increase in the number of tankers, and the tankers themselves have become larger and larger. However, this has also led to an increase in the number of large-scale oil spills and dumping due to tanker accidents, and oil pollution has come to be recognized worldwide as a major marine pollution issue. Prevention measures were considered by IMCO (now the IMO), and in 1954 the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution of Sea Waters by Oil was established.
