A city in the Java Timur Province in eastern Java, Indonesia. It is located about 100 km southwest of Surabaya, and is served by a railway line. It is located in the fertile Brantas River basin, and cultivates rice, corn, cassava, sugarcane, peanuts, coffee, quinine, tobacco, etc. There is a large clove tobacco factory. It was the capital of the Kediri dynasty from the 11th to 13th centuries. Population: 221,830 (1980).
