A dynasty (928/9-1222) that flourished in eastern Java from the early 10th century to the early 13th century. It began when the Mataram Kingdom of Central Java moved to this area, and its first king was Sinduk (reigned 928/9-947). King Dharmavansha (reigned 985/9-1006/7) was famous for compiling legal codes and translating Sanskrit literature. In 1006, the kingdom was defeated by the Srivijaya Kingdom of Sumatra, and its power declined, but it was restored under Erlangga (reigned 19-49). After his death, the kingdom was divided into two, Janggala and Panjalu, and was later reunited, but the country was destroyed under King Kertajaya, and was replaced by the Singhasari dynasty. The epic poems "The Marriage of Arjuna" and "Bharatayuddha" are representative literary works of this dynasty.
