Tenpoku coalfield

Japanese: 天北炭田 - てんぽくたんでん

A coalfield in the northern part of the Teshio Mountains in northern Hokkaido. It is distributed in the Soya Hills region, stretching about 50 km north to south and 20 km east to west. Coal beds (→coal seams) are most developed in the central region, and the coal is lignite with a calorific value of about 5000 calorie. There are many small and medium-sized coal mines, all of which were closed after 1958 due to coal mine rationalization, but the actual coal yield (→recoverable amount) up to a depth of 300 m is 160 million tons. The ash of Tenpoku coal contains a large amount of boron, so it is possible to recover it in the future.

北海道北部，天塩山地の北部にある炭田。宗谷丘陵地域に分布し，南北約 50km，東西約 20km。夾炭層 (→炭層 ) は中央地帯に最もよく発達，炭質は発熱量 5000cal前後の褐炭。中小規模の炭鉱が多く，1958年以後の炭鉱合理化によりすべて閉山したが，深さ 300mまでの間の実収炭量 (→可採鉱量 ) が1億 6000万tある。なお，天北炭の灰分中にはホウ素が多量に含まれているので，将来的にその回収が考えられる。
