A scholar of Japanese language and literature. Born in Tajima Province (Hyogo Prefecture). Graduated from Hyogo Prefectural Normal School (now Kobe University). After working as a teacher at Tokyo Prefectural First Middle School, he became a professor at Gakushuin and in his later years at Komazawa University. He made great contributions to basic research in Japanese grammar, history of Japanese linguistics, waka, linked verse, and the arts and sciences of the feudal lords of the Edo period. His works include the 3-volume "Dai Nihon Uta Shoran" (Comprehensive Guide to Japanese Poetry) (1926-1928), "Research and Commentary on Pillow Words" (1927), 2-volume "Historical Study of Linked Verse" (1930-1931), and "Academic Studies and Research on the Feudal Lords" (1937), and he edited and authored the 20-volume "Kokugogaku Taikei" (Comprehensive Japanese Language Studies) (1938-1965).
