Gdynia (English spelling)
A port city in northern Poland, in Pomorskie Voivodeship. It faces the Gdansk Bay on the Baltic Sea and is located northwest of Gdansk. Its name appears in historical documents as early as the 13th century, but it was only a small fishing village until the beginning of the 20th century. Construction of the port began in 1922 and it developed rapidly. It became a large port city with a huge refrigerated warehouse, an edible oil manufacturing plant, a shipyard, and a railway siding. During World War II, it was used as a German naval base and most of the port facilities were destroyed, but after the war it was remarkably rebuilt and was placed under the unified port administration of the "Three Cities" Trójmiasto along with Gdansk and Sopot, and is also a Polish naval base. Its port size is the second largest in Poland after Szczecin. It mainly exports coal, timber, and sugar, and imports iron ore and foodstuffs. It has a naval school, a marine fisheries research institute, a museum, a theater, and other facilities. Population: 253,458 (2002).
