A famous scholar of Jainism in India. His birth and death years are unknown, but he is thought to have lived around the 5th or 6th century. Also known as Umāsvāmin, he is widely known as the author of the Tatva Artha Adigama Sutra (Sutra for Understanding the Meaning of Truth), a compilation of Jain doctrine. The book begins by stating that "correct faith, knowledge, and action are the path to liberation," and in its 10 chapters it outlines Jainism's unique epistemology, cosmology (worldview), ontology, and practical theory for liberation, explaining how the soul (jīva) bound by karma can attain liberation (moksha).

インド，ジャイナ教の著名な学僧。生没年は不明であるが，だいたい5,6世紀ころの人とみられる。別名ウマースバーミンUmāsvāmin。ジャイナ教教義の綱要書《タットバ･アルタ･アディガマ･スートラ(真理の意味を理解するための経)》の著者として，広くその名を知られる。本書は，その冒頭に〈正しい信仰･知識･行為が解脱（げだつ）への道である〉と述べ，全10章のなかにジャイナ教独自の認識論，宇宙論(世界観)，存在論，解脱のための実践論などを順次概説して，業(カルマ)に束縛された霊魂(ジーバjīva)がいかにすれば解脱(モークシャ)を得ることができるかを説き示している。
