A small annual plant of the Scrophulariaceae family that grows in marshes (illustration). It can become a weed in paddy fields. The stems are soft and cylindrical, 10-25 cm tall. The leaves are opposite. The leaves at the base are narrowly oblong, 10-25 mm long, 3-5 mm wide, and lack serrations. The leaves become smaller as they move up the stem. From summer to autumn, one flower is produced at each leaf axil. Sessile closed flowers are produced at the axils of the leaves in the middle of the stem, and normal flowers with stalks are produced at the axils of the leaves at the top. The corolla is labiate, pale purple, and 5-6 mm long.
