Hokkaido Colliery Steamship Co., Ltd.

Japanese: 北海道炭礦汽船[株] - ほっかいどうたんこうきせん

Founded in 1889 by Hori Motoi as Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Co., Ltd., based on the Horonai coal mine and associated railway, which had been transferred to the company by the government. Abbreviated as Hokutan. A Mitsui subsidiary. Developed two coal mines, Sorachi and Yubari, in 1890. Became Hokkaido Colliery and Railway Co., Ltd. in 1893, and adopted its current name in 1906 after nationalization of the railway. After World War II, the company's management deteriorated due to a sharp decline in demand caused by the energy revolution, aging of the company, and an accident at its subsidiary, Hokutan Yubari Coal Mine, in 1981, which killed 93 people. Went bankrupt in February 1995.
