Usukawamaimai (English spelling) Siebold's globular snail

A snail of the family Acanthidae in the class Gastropoda of the phylum Mollusca. A. sieboldiana is an alternative name. It is the most common snail in Japan, distributed throughout Japan and the Korean peninsula. It lives in fields and gardens, feeding on tree seedlings and vegetables, and is also often found among sea cucumbers on the coast. Its shell is spherical, reaching a height of 20 mm and a diameter of 25 mm, and is thin. It has five spiral layers, and the shell surface is amber to purple-brown, but has no color bands. The shell opening is wide and large, but the outer lip is not thickened like other snails. The mantle of the soft body ranges from yellowish-white to purple-brown with markings, and can be seen through the skin, but it may not match the color of the shell. It lays eggs on the ground in early summer and autumn.

軟体動物門腹足綱オナジマイマイ科のカタツムリ。A. sieboldianaは異名。日本ではもっとも普通にみられるカタツムリで、日本全土および朝鮮半島に分布している。畑や庭園にすんで木の苗や野菜を食害するほか、海岸のハマユウの間にも多い。殻は球形で、殻高20ミリメートル、殻径25ミリメートルに達し、殻質は薄い。螺層(らそう)は5階で、殻表はこはく色から紫褐色などであるが、色帯はまったくない。殻口は広く大きいが、外唇はほかのマイマイ類のように肥厚していない。軟体の外套膜(がいとうまく)は黄白色のものから紫褐色の斑紋(はんもん)のあるものまであって透けてみえるが、殻の色と一致していない場合もある。初夏と秋に地面に産卵する。
