The greatest poet of the Abbasid period. Born in Ahwaz and raised in Basra. Although he worked as a pharmacist, his talent for poetry was recognized, and he gained knowledge in Kufa, Baghdad, and among the nomads. Through the vizier Bakhmaq family, he became acquainted with the Abbasid caliph Harun al-Rashid, then Amin and Ma'mun, and their close friendship is depicted in The Thousand and One Nights. His poetry is excellent in every field, but he is particularly famous for his poems about love and wine. Although his expressions are simple, his innovative style of composing poetry that ignores tradition has had a great influence on later generations.

アッバース朝期最大の詩人。アフワーズで生まれ，バスラで育つ。薬剤師を生業としていたが詩才が認められ，クーファ，バグダード，さらに遊牧民の間で教養を積む。宰相バクマク家を通してアッバース朝カリフのハールーン･アッラシード，次いでアミーン，マームーンの知遇を得，その深い親交は《千夜一夜物語》にも描かれている。詩はあらゆる領域にわたって秀逸であるが，とくに恋愛と酒の詩が名高い。表現は平明であるが，その伝統を無視した斬新な詩作法は，後世に多大な影響を残した。
