This law was enacted to standardize and simplify the standards of industrial products and the various factors of their production process nationwide. It was enacted in 1949, Law No. 185. The standards are called "industrial standards" and the main purpose of this law is to promote industrial standardization and thereby improve the quality of industrial products, increase production efficiency, streamline production, simplify and fair trade, and rationalize consumption, thereby contributing to the promotion of welfare. Factors for standardization and unification include a wide range of factors such as the type, model, shape, size, structure, equipment, quality, grade, ingredients, performance, durability, and safety of industrial products. Production and design methods and usage methods are also subject to industrial standardization. Furthermore, the standardization of packaging and product testing methods and contents, technical terms and symbols are also included in industrial standardization activities. Industrial standards established by the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, an independent administrative institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, are called Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS).
