Cordia dichotoma Forst.f.

Japanese: カキバチシャノキ(英語表記)Cordia dichotoma Forst.f.
Cordia dichotoma Forst.f.
A medium-sized tree of the Boraginaceae family that is widely distributed in the tropics of Asia. In Japan, it is found to grow south of the Amami Islands. The bark is fibrous, and young branches are covered with deciduous hairs. The leaves are alternate and ovate or elliptical. They are 7-12 cm long and 4-7 cm wide. The edges are entire and slightly wavy. The inflorescence is axillary and develops with the new leaves as a bifurcated cyme, and the scientific name dichotoma (meaning bifurcated) is derived from this characteristic. The corolla is pale yellow, about 7 mm in diameter, has 5 lobes, and opens flat. The fruit is a globose berry about 1 cm in diameter that turns red when ripe and later turns black.
