Kuji River

Japanese: 久慈川 - くじがわ
Kuji River
A river that flows through northern Ibaraki Prefecture. It originates from Mount Yamizo on the border with Fukushima Prefecture, merges with the Yamizo River and Sato River along the way, and empties into the Pacific Ocean at the border between Hitachi City and Tokai Village. It is 124 km long. River terraces have developed in the midstream north of Hitachi-Omiya City, with the upper terraces used as farmland and the lower terraces used as rice paddies. In Daigo Town upstream, incised meanders and gorges can be seen, and along with its tributary, Fukuroda Falls, it belongs to Okukuji Prefectural Natural Park. The river water is used for drinking water and industrial water for Hitachi City and other areas. The mouth of the river was L-shaped due to coastal flow, but has been remodeled to be straight. Hitachi Port was built on the left bank of the old mouth, where heavy electrical equipment is shipped and northern timber is unloaded. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has a facility in Tokai Village on the right bank of the mouth.

Kuji River

This river originates at the northern foot of Mt. Hiraniwa (1,060m) in northeastern Iwate Prefecture, flows eastward and empties into Kuji Bay. It is about 40km long. For about 5km from Imodanibashi Bridge to Iwaibashi Bridge in Kuji City, it forms a deep gorge, and both banks are gray-white cliffs made of limestone. It is called the Kuji Stream and is part of the Kuji Hiraniwa Prefectural Natural Park. In the lower reaches, the Naganai River and Natsui River join together, forming an alluvial lowland.
