Momokawa Joen

Japanese: 桃川如燕 - ももかわじょえん

Storyteller. (1) The first (1832-1998, Tempo 3-Meiji 31), real name Sugiura Yosuke. A disciple of the first Ito Enshin, he was called Daijoen because he performed before Emperor Meiji. He was popular for his bold reading style, and it is said that he often performed under the influence of alcohol. (2) The second (1867-1929, Keio 3-Showa 4), real name Saito Kakichi. A disciple of the third Ichiryusai Teizan, he switched to the Momokawa school and succeeded the second generation. His specialty was the story of the Gishi, and he was very popular. (3) The third (1898-1976, Meiji 31-Showa 51), real name Okada Hideaki.

講談師。(1)初代(1832‐98∥天保3‐明治31)　本名杉浦要助。初代伊東燕晋（えんしん）の門人で，明治天皇の御前口演をつとめたことから大如燕と呼ばれる。豪放な読み口で人気があり，酒気をおびた高座が多かったといわれる。(2)2代(1867‐1929∥慶応3‐昭和4)　本名斉藤嘉吉。3代一竜斎貞山の門から桃川派に転じ2代を継ぐ。《義士伝》を十八番とし，人望も厚かった。(3)3代(1898‐1976∥明治31‐昭和51)　本名岡田秀章。
