...In organized religions such as Buddhism and Christianity, the image of the afterlife presented in this way is consistent, whether it is heaven, paradise, or hell, but in less organized religions and folk beliefs, many contradictory images often coexist. For example, in Japanese folk religions, there are coexisting mountain views of the afterlife, which consider the peak of a mountain to be the location of the afterlife, views of the afterlife at sea, and views of the afterlife underground, which consider caves to be the entrance to the afterlife. The existence of these different images is not due to differences in regional differences or differences in the origins of the traditions, but rather to the overlapping of many contradictory concrete images, which have the effect of illustrating the reality of the afterlife itself and life after death itself. ...

…仏教やキリスト教のような組織宗教の場合には，こうして呈示される他界のイメージは，天国や極楽にしても地獄にしても，一応の一貫性をもっているが，組織化の進んでいない宗教や民間信仰の場合は，互いに矛盾するいくつものイメージが共存していることが多い。たとえば日本の民俗宗教においては，山岳の頂きを他界の在所とする山上他界観や，海の彼方に他界があると考える海上他界観，あるいは洞窟などを他界の入口とみなすような地中(地下)他界観が併存している。これらの異なるイメージの存在は，地域差あるいは伝承の由来の違いによる差異というよりも，むしろ互いに矛盾しつつも多くの具体的なイメージを重ねることによって他界そのもの，死後の生そのものの実在性を例証する効果をもたらしているのだと言えよう。…
