1867‐1946 Polish scholar and politician. He studied chemistry at Riga Technical University. He became involved in the socialist movement and fled to Britain and Switzerland in 1892. He discovered a new method for producing nitrogen, and in 1912 he became a professor at Lvov Polytechnic University, contributing to the development of the chemical industry. After the political upheaval of May 1926, he was appointed president by his friend J. Piuszki, and faithfully carried out his policies. When World War II broke out in 1939, he fled to Romania and handed power over to the government in exile in Paris. He died in exile in Switzerland after the war.
