Gushikami [village] - Gushikami

Japanese: 具志頭[村] - ぐしかみ
Gushikami [village] - Gushikami
A village in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture. Population 7,095 (1995). Located at the southern tip of Okinawa Island (main island), the town has an undulating hilly terrain, with cliffs along the southern half of the coastline and shallow coral reefs along the coast. Before World War II, the village was centered on agriculture and fishing, with many immigrants to Hawaii, South America, and other places. Minatogawa in the east was established by Itoman fishermen who relocated there, and is the village's only fishing port, where fishing is still thriving. Agriculture involves the cultivation of sugarcane, vegetables, and flowers, and livestock such as dairy cows and pigs are also thriving.
