Shimoda [village] - Shimoda

Japanese: 下田[村] - しただ

A village in Minamikanbara County, central Niigata Prefecture. Population 12,017 (1995). Located in the Igarashi River basin, a tributary of the Shinano River, the village is made up of lowlands along the river and mountainous areas that border Fukushima Prefecture. The area has long been known as Shimoda-go, and in the Middle Ages was under the control of the local lord Igarashi clan. In the early modern period, it became the territory of the Muramatsu Domain, and new rice fields were developed along the Igarashi River. The Igarashi River has often been hit by floods, but the multi-purpose Kasahori Dam was completed in 1964, and the Otani Dam in 1993. The mountain valleys around Kasahori Dam are a habitat for Japanese serows (heaven).

新潟県中部，南蒲原郡の村。人口1万2017(1995)。信濃川支流五十嵐川流域を占め，川沿いの低地と福島県境をなす山地からなる。古くから下田郷と呼ばれた地で，中世には土豪五十嵐氏の支配下にあった。近世には村松藩領となり，五十嵐川沿いの新田開発が進められた。五十嵐川沿いはたびたび水害にみまわれたが，1964年多目的の笠堀ダム，93年には大谷ダムが完成した。笠堀ダム周辺の山あいはニホンカモシカの生息地(天)。
