Japanese: 草双紙物 - くさぞうしもの

A type of Kabuki-Kyogen based on kusazoshi (combined volumes of Japanese comic books). The combined volumes, including Shikitei Sanba's Ikazuchitarou Goaku Monogatari (The Tale of the Evil Thunder Tarō) published in 1806 (Bunka 3), are a type of illustrated novel, and are publications that strongly reflect the tastes of Kabuki, with illustrations featuring portraits of popular actors of the time. At first, theater people rejected the dramatization of the novels (Sakusha Nenchu Gyōji), but after Tsuruya Namboku IV (whose pen name in the combined volumes was Ubajiyosuke), interactions with the theatrical world were formed, and dramatization of kusazoshi became popular.

草双紙(合巻（ごうかん）)に取材した歌舞伎狂言の一系統。1806年(文化3)刊の式亭三馬作《雷太郎強悪物語（いかずちたろうごうあくものがたり）》をはじめとする合巻は，絵入小説の一種で，当代の人気俳優の似顔によって挿絵が描かれるなど，歌舞伎趣味の色濃く投影された出版物。当初，小説の劇化は劇場人の側から拒絶されてきたが(《作者年中行事》)，4世鶴屋南北(合巻での筆名は姥尉輔（うばじようすけ）)以降，劇界との交流が生まれ，草双紙の劇化も盛行した。
