A former town in Kishima District, western Saga Prefecture. It is separated from other towns in the district by the neighboring city of Takeo to the east. It is a rural area centered around a small basin in the upper reaches of the Matsuura River, and in addition to rice, it is also known for growing ginger, matsutake mushrooms, tea, and mandarin oranges. It is on the outer edge of the Arita ceramics region, and the Hyakuman Kiln and Yamabeda Kiln sites from the early modern period have been designated national historic sites, and it produces folk-style ceramics such as vases. It is on the Sasebo Line, and many people commute to Takeo City, Imari City, and Arita Town.
