Luanda (English spelling)
The capital of Angola. A commercial and port city facing the Atlantic Ocean in the northwest of the country, it is also the capital of Luanda Province. Founded by the Portuguese in 1576 as a military base for trade and inland invasions, it became the administrative center of Portuguese Angola in 1627 and played an important role as a distribution center for agricultural and mineral products and as a slave exporter to Brazil. In 1955, oil fields were discovered nearby, and an oil refinery was built at the northern end of Luanda Bay. It became an important base for Angolan independence. It is the starting point of the railway to Malange, and has a wide range of tourist facilities, including an international airport, world-class hotels, and theaters. The city is located in scenic hills facing a small island in Luanda Bay, and has historical buildings dating back to the 17th century, as well as the Angola Museum and the Geological Museum. Population: 2,783,000 (2004 estimate).
