…Dokan was well versed in military science and also excelled in the arts and sciences, and was on close acquaintance with Banri Shuku and other learned monks and writers from the Five Mountains. [Shimomura Nobuhiro] When Dokan went falconry and got caught in the rain and tried to borrow a raincoat, a young woman offered him a mountain bush clover. He realized that this was the meaning of an old poem (Miscellaneous in Goshuishū) that goes, “Seven-layered, eight-layered flowers bloom, but there is no Yamabuki no Hitotsu Da Naki Zo Sadashi,” and felt ashamed of his ignorance. This anecdote is well-known and is recorded in works such as Jōzan Kidan (written by Yuasa Jōzan, written around Genbun-Meiwa) and Amechu Mondō (written by Nishimura Tohri, 1778). The original form of the rakugo story Dokan that is passed down today was created in Otoshibanashi Warau Hayashi (written by the first Hayashiya Shozō) published in 1833 (Tenpō 4) by parodying this story. …
