The formats used in foreign countries include the book system (marginal system), in which the corrections are crossed out and the corrections or symbols are written in the margin, and the path line system (pull-out system), in which a line is drawn from the corrections to the margin and the corrections are written in. In Japan, the pull-out system is widely used, and the first proofreading symbols were created in 1870 (Meiji 3) by Shozo Motoki, who founded letterpress printing, taking into account foreign methods and designed for Japanese texts. Today, the symbols that are widely used are those that were established in 1934 by the Proofreading Symbols Committee of the Japanese Society of Printing Science and Technology, and then further refined and revised by the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology in 1965 and established as the Japanese Industrial Standard (JISZ8208). …
