The capital of Telemark County in southern Norway, it is the administrative and economic center. It has a population of 50,023 (2002). The city is located on both banks of the Skien River, about 5 km upstream from the head of the fjord. Norway's first hydroelectric power station was built here in 1887, using water power that was once used to power sawmills. Today, sawmills, paper mills, pulp mills, etc. operate with electricity transmitted from large inland power plants. It was the birthplace of the writer Ibsen, and the house where he spent his childhood is now the Ibsen Museum.
