...The reason why the company did not reveal the names of certain actors and kept them "unknown" was, on the one hand, because they feared that if their names were combined with their popularity and they became "popular actors" in both name and reality, they would naturally demand high performance fees, and on the other hand, it is said that some actors looked down on film compared to theater and did not want their names to be known. In 1909, when the American film industry was booming, independent producer Carl Laemmle founded the Independent Motion Picture Company of America (IMP) to compete with the trust called the Motion Picture Patents Company. He paid Florence Lawrence (1886-1938), a popular actress who was then known only as the "Biograph Girl," an extraordinary $1,000 a week compared to Biograph's $25 weekly salary, and promised her screen credit in the film, and he conducted a legendary "advertising" campaign that remains in American film history to promote her as the "IMP Girl." When a false story spread among the press that Florence Lawrence, the Biograph Girl, had been killed in a St. Louis streetcar accident, her name and photograph were published in numerous newspapers, including the Sunday edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which ran a lengthy article mourning the death of the Biograph Girl. *Some terminology explanations that mention "screen credit" are listed below. …
